Bachelor of Science Degree

The major in finance is designed for students interested in specializing in the finance industry. Graduates can seek employment within organizations such as banks, investment companies, brokerage houses, or in the finance departments of corporations.

Finance is one of the principal topic areas within business management. All students preparing in business should know the principles of finance, since money is a basic measure of business activity and capital funds are an essential element for all organizations. However, students majoring in finance study not only the fundamental principles, but also in-depth and varied finance topics.

Although the finance major offers a focused learning experience by using elective opportunities for finance coursework, the overall degree requirements give students a broad business management perspective. The degree requirements which follow are based upon four years of study, and the students may fulfill many of these requirements through transfer credits

Degree Requirements

B.S. Program

Arts and Science – 64 semester hours. Must complete seven of ten general education categories (1-10) with a minimum of 30 general education credits.

I. SUNY General Education Requirements (30 credits)

All SUNY students must satisfy the following requirements.

No fewer than 30 credits must be attained from the SUNY approved General Education Course List with the following provisions:

  • Communication (written and oral)
  • Mathematics (and quantitative reasoning)
  • Natural Sciences (and scientific reasoning)
  • Diversity: Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice

At least three (3) out of the following six (6) SUNY General Education categories:

  • The Arts
  • Humanities
  • Social Sciences
  • U.S. History and Civic Engagement
  • Other World Civilization
  • World History and Global Awareness
  • World Languages

NOTE: You may take more than one course in a given category to complete this 30-credit hour requirement, but you must also satisfy the appropriate number of categories.

II. Liberal Arts/Sciences Requirements (32 credits)

The New York State Education Department (SED) requires a student earning a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Finance to attain no fewer than 60 credits of combined SUNY General Education and Liberal Arts/Sciences courses. The total number of combined credit hours must be no fewer than 62 credits.

SUNY Poly degree requirements:

  • Natural Sciences—one course which may be a General Education Natural Science course.
  • Upper-Division Writing Course (COM 307)

Specific requirements for BS in Finance majors:

  • MAT 112 Elements of Calculus
  • Behavioral Science (PSY, SOC, or ANT)
  • Microeconomics (ECO 110 or equivalent)
  • Macroeconomics (ECO 112 or equivalent)

NOTE: A minimum of a C (2.00 GPA) is required in all finance and business core courses taken at SUNY Poly, requirements and electives. All business transfer courses must have a grade of “C” or better to apply to the degree program.

*Written communication and technical writing courses do not fulfill this requirement.
