Sean Smith ’23: Turning Passion for Technology into a Thriving Startup

Sean Smith ‘23 is already making waves in the tech world with the launch of his own startup, Triarii AI LLC. The company has a mission of developing large language models for use by cybersecurity professionals.

Growing up in Staten Island, Sean, who majored in Computer and Information Systems, always knew he wanted to pursue a career in computer science and technology. A visit to SUNY Poly in 2017 sealed the deal, as he found a welcoming community that shared his passion for STEM and provided the perfect environment to thrive.

During his time at SUNY Poly, Sean was a dynamic presence on campus. He revived the SUNY Poly Chess Club, competed in the CNY Hackathon, participated in the Innovation Challenge New York, and the New York State Business Plan Competition. These experiences, coupled with the mentorship of professors who brought real-world expertise into the classroom, as well as an internship at Assured Information Security, helped shape Sean’s entrepreneurial spirit and prepared him for success beyond graduation.

Sean’s journey into entrepreneurship began with his interest in AI and cybersecurity. Inspired by the rapid advancements in AI technology, he identified a gap in the cybersecurity industry: the need for AI-driven tools tailored for penetration testing and vulnerability research. Recognizing this niche, Sean started his own company, creating innovative solutions to address these challenges.

Sean’s startup gained significant traction through the Hustle Defense Accelerator. Following weeks of mentorship, members of the accelerator’s cohort had the opportunity to compete against one another, presenting to a panel of judges from the local community, government and private sector. Sean was selected as one of the winners, securing $25,000 towards Triarii AI LLC. Reflecting on the experience, he credits not just the financial support but also the invaluable mentorship and guidance from industry leaders at the Griffiss Institute.

When asked about his advice for current SUNY Poly students, Sean emphasizes the importance of seizing opportunities:

“Participate in as many campus events as you can,” he said. “You never know what might inspire you or lead to unexpected opportunities.

“Take the initiative to apply what you’re learning in class to personal projects,” he added. “It demonstrates creativity and drive, which are invaluable in the tech industry.”

Looking ahead, Sean envisions growing his company into a leader in AI-driven cybersecurity solutions, blending innovation with a commitment to solving complex challenges. Sean remains connected to the SUNY Poly community and credits his alma mater for laying the foundation for his ambitious career in technology and entrepreneurship.

As he reflects on his SUNY Poly experience, Sean acknowledges the unique impact of the close-knit community and industry connections: “SUNY Poly is at the heart of a region full of opportunities. The people here—mentors, professors, and peers—truly make a difference.”
