PBH 301         Foundations of Public Health (3)

Public health is concerned with the health of groups of people and society as a whole. This course examines the state, discipline and profession of public health, also called population health, primarily in the US and to some extent globally. It covers the history and political context of public health; principles and goals of public health practice; the role of biostatistics and epidemiology in public health; the biomedical sources of disease; the importance of the environment for public health; issues in the US healthcare system; and future issues in public health around the world. As a survey of the entire field, the course provides a foundational background for further studies in public health and related disciplines.

PBH 310         Planning Public Health Programs (3)

This course covers the concepts and principles of planning public health programs. Topics covered include: needs assessment, program planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health interventions and programs. Community organizing, resources, and marketing will also be discussed. Examples will be drawn from health education, health promotion, disease prevention, public health services, and NGO’s.

PBH 425         Health Communication (3)

Health communication is the field and study of communicating health and scientific information. Health communication requires understanding of psychology, behavior and social context to assess the impact that communication can have on individuals and populations. Health communication may be undertaken by individuals, health professionals and organizations, and may use various technologies and means of communication to create behavior change and improve health outcomes. Research in this area focuses on the uses of media, rhetoric and analytical skills to influence individuals’ decision-making and health outcomes. This course provides a foundation for work in clinical settings, public health, marketing and communications, and other health-related professions. Prerequisites: None.

PBH 457 Social Determinants of Health (3)

Health outcomes are determined by more than just standard medical care. This course introduces students to the social and environmental determinants of health, wellness and illness. The theories and empirical evidence in support of population health are critically examined and applied to public health education, practice and policy to promote a healthier society with greater health equity and resilience. Special attention is given to the cultural and geographical differences of various populations. Prerequisites: PBH 301 or CBH 375.
