Art from around the world, found close to home

Art can be found anywhere – in the buildings we pass each day, to the icicles forming outside an office window.

Or, it can be found in a conventional setting like a museum or gallery.

Sometimes, before being hung on those walls for all to see, the piece of art may have been in an attic, a basement, a flea market, or some other location. In most cases, the journey before it appears or re-appears to a public audience after years in hiding is a mystery that may never be solved.

That type of mystery is exactly what Exhibit Curator and SUNY Poly Web Coordinator Lynne Browne uses to intrigue attendants to the Gannett Gallery’s latest exhibit, As Found. The exhibit is a gathering of artwork from around the world, in “as found” condition and found close to home (Central New York).

“Many questions arise when looking at a piece of art…what was the artist trying to portray during its creation? Why did someone initially own it? To commemorate a trip? Perhaps it was a gift? Who owned it last and how did it get to its most recent destination? Why is it in its current condition? Why did the artist sign the piece illegibly or not at all?” Browne asks. “The questions are endless and sometimes never answered. Even without all the answers, we can embrace the imperfections because they help tell part of the artwork’s story.”

As Found is currently on display in the Gannett Art Gallery at SUNY Poly, located on the first floor in the B-wing of Kunsela Hall. Gallery Hours M-F 9:00 am – 4:30 pm.
