Gallup named Fellow of The Psychonomic Society
In recognition of his research contributions to the field of experimental psychology, Dr. Andrew Gallup Assistant Professor of Psychology, was recently named as a Fellow of The Psychonomic Society.
The Psychonomic Society, founded by a group of experimental psychologists during a meeting in Chicago in 1959, is the home for scientists who study how the mind works. Members of the society are cognitive psychologists and include some of the most distinguished researchers in the field. Many are concerned with the application of psychology to health, technology, and education, while other conduct the most innovative research using converging methods such as neuroscience and computational science to achieve their research goals.
What brings together these various members, however, is that they all study the basic fundamental properties of how the mind works by using behavioral techniques to better understand mental functioning.
“Congratulations to Dr. Gallup on this well-deserved honor,” said Dr. Bahgat Sammakia, Interim President of SUNY Poly. “This is a true testament to his outstanding research, scholarly activities and service to the community.”
A representative from the Psychonomic Society stated that the honor is given in recognition of Dr. Gallup’s significant psychological research publications beyond his doctoral dissertation in experimental psychology.
Dr. Gallup is an evolutionary psychologist/neuroscientist with diverse interests in adaptive behavior and physiology. He studies a variety of topics, including contagious behavior and comparative neuroanatomy, brain thermoregulation and vigilance, collective behavior and social cognition, aggression and social dominance, the evolution of cooperation, winner and loser effects, biomarkers of Darwinian fitness, and the effects of neuromodulation on adaptive responses.
Earning his post-doctorate in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University, his PhD in Biological Sciences from Binghamton University and his Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of Albany, Dr. Gallup joined SUNY Poly’s College of Arts & Sciences in Summer 2017.
