SUNY Polytechnic Institute continues to receive increasing national recognition for its top-tier educational offerings, with U.S. News & World Report ranking the institution 15th in its 2018 list of Best Colleges in the Regional Universities North category—jumping up three positions from its 2017 ranking of 18. Additionally, SUNY Poly remained 3rd in Top Public Regional Universities North for the second year in a row. SUNY Poly also rose through the rankings to 6th for Best Colleges for Veterans amid Regional Universities North.

“Each of SUNY’s 64 colleges and universities help our students find their purpose and their passion. Whether it’s in research, education, outreach, or engagement, our colleges and universities strive to achieve excellence in everything they do,” said SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson. “We are thrilled that so many of our SUNY campuses have again received favorable rankings by U.S. News & World Report. While we appreciate that rankings are one indication of quality, it does help demonstrate that SUNY is one of the best national education systems. Congratulations to each of the SUNY campuses recognized by the 2018 U.S. News and World Report rankings.”

“SUNY Poly is proud of the work of its faculty and staff, as well as the academic achievements of our students, all of whom are enabling this institution’s quality educational experience, leading to this recognition by the prestigious U.S News & World Report,” said Dr. Bahgat Sammakia, Interim President of SUNY Polytechnic Institute. “SUNY Poly’s high ranking is truly a wonderful affirmation that this institution offers a valuable education, and we hope it encourages prospective students to take a deeper look at all that SUNY Poly has to offer them.”

The annual rankings by U.S. News group schools based upon their Carnegie Classification, created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. SUNY Poly is included in the Regional Universities North category and placed 15th overall out of 145 ranked universities. Within its classification, SUNY Poly was also ranked:

  • 3rd in Public Regional Universities North (maintaining the position for the second straight year)
  • 6th (tie) in the Best Colleges for Veterans (rising from its 2017 10th place position)

The continued high rankings are a positive recognition of a number of aspects of SUNY Poly’s educational offerings, as U.S. News & World Report maintains seven general ranking categories, each with different weights assigned to them to determine the final institution positions. These categories include graduation and retention, assessment of excellence, and faculty and financial resources, among others.

“It is through the hard work, dedication, and talent of our faculty, staff, and students that SUNY Poly continues to march upward in the U.S. News and World Report rankings. Our reputation reflects the fact that SUNY Poly graduates have the qualifications and skills that are in high need in the workforce.” said Dr. William Durgin, SUNY Poly Provost. “These rankings are evidence that SUNY Poly is offering incredible return on investment to its students in providing the highest quality of education.”

Over the past year, SUNY Poly has seen increased enrollment in programs such as Interactive Media and Game Design and both the graduate and undergraduate level Nursing programs. The institution has also continued to expand its programs and course offerings for students with programs in Computational Mathematical Modeling, specialized coursework in forensic accounting and valuation, and a minor in Creativity and Ethical Venturing. These new opportunities are attracting top-level students from around the nation and the world.
