HIM 111\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Medical Terminology (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The language of medicine including Latin\/Greek prefixes, suffixes and root words.\u00a0 Diagnostic and procedural terms will be included.\u00a0 Minimum C grade required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 212\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pathophysiology for Health Information Management (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

A study of major disease processes including their symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.\u00a0 Students will learn which diagnostic tests are used as well as the appropriate surgical techniques.\u00a0 Basic pharmacology and the most commonly used drugs will be discussed. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 305\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Inpatient Coding and Classification (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Coding and classification schemes used for hospital inpatients will be discussed.\u00a0 Special emphasis will be placed on the International Classification of Disease-10th-Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and International Classification of Disease-10th-Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS).\u00a0 ICD-9CM will be discussed as legacy. Prerequisites: HIM 100,111,212 and BIO 115 and 116 (or BIO 215T\/L or BIO 216T\/L). Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 306\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Outpatient Coding and Classification (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Coding and classification schemes used for outpatients in hospitals, ambulatory care centers and physician offices will be discussed.\u00a0 Special emphasis will be placed on Current Procedural Terminology, 4th edition (CPT-4), and reimbursement classifications. Prerequisites: HIM 111, BIO 115 (or BIO 215), BIO 116 (or BIO 216). Corequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in HIM 305. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 309\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Legal Aspects of Health Information (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Overview of the legal system, civil procedure, rules of evidence, tort law, corporation law, contracts, and antitrust laws. Discussion of specific laws related to health information such as patient consent, the legal health record, privacy, security, access, disclosure, release of information, required reporting, risk management, quality improvement, corporate compliance, medical staff, and worker-related issues. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 313\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Management for the Health Professions (3) <\/strong><\/p>\n

Introduces students to six basic management functions (planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling and decision making) in the context of health care such as hospitals, long term care facilities and other health related organizations. Concepts of management and management responsibilities (such as ethics, leadership and motivation) are related to selected functions. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 330\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Databases in Health Information Management (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Practical approaches to topics of data modeling, databases, and data warehousing. Use of database management software to store health care data. Study of query techniques for data definition, manipulation, control, and presentation. Investigation of data quality, data stewardship, and database administration in health information management. Pre\/corequisite: CSC 111C. Minimum grade of C.<\/p>\n

HIM 392\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Professional Practice Experience- Technical (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The student will complete a three-week practicum in a hospital health information management services area.\u00a0 Students will practice technical skills learned during the first year of the health information management curriculum.\u00a0 (Note: Students who transfer from a health information technology program will transfer the equivalent of this course.)\u00a0 Prerequisites:\u00a0 HIM 100, HIM 305, HIM 306, HIM 309, BIO 115 or BIO 215T\/L, BIO 116 or BIO 216T\/L, matriculated status in the SUNY Polytechnic Institute HIM program. Permission of Instructor Required. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 400\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Non-Hospital Health Information Management Systems (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Non-hospital health care settings offer exciting employment alternatives for health information managers.\u00a0 Included in this course will be a study of health information systems for psychiatric, ambulatory, hospice, developmental, occupational, long term, home health, correctional, and veterinary care facilities.\u00a0 In addition, cancer and trauma registries will be covered.\u00a0 Prerequisites: HIM 392. HIM 401\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Quality Improvement in Health Information Management (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Overview of quality assessment and improvement methods in health information management. Application of tools for defining, measuring, analyzing, controlling, and benchmarking quality. Consideration of the effects of health information technology and other factors on the quality of health care. Prerequisites: HIM 100, STA 100. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 403\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Introduction to Epidemiology (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Preventing the incidence of disease requires an understanding of the risk factors associated with its cause. This course will provide a foundation for understanding the dynamics of health and disease in society, and impart a grasp of the fundamentals of epidemiology. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors. Pre\/corequisite: CSC 111C<\/p>\n

HIM 425\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Research in Health Information Management (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Examines the environment for health and medical research in the United States, including the protection of human subjects. Provides an overview of the HIPAA privacy and security rules as they pertain to research. Identifies the major research methods. Uses a case study approach to prepare students to conduct analysis of primary research data and research-oriented secondary data using statistical software. Prerequisites: HIM 305, HIM 309, HIM 330, and STA 100. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 435\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Health Information Systems (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Exposes healthcare managers to areas where information systems can assist in the direct care of the patient and in the management of healthcare settings. Emphasis will be placed on how to evaluate systems, the unique problems in the healthcare environment, and strategies for minimizing problems. Prerequisites: HIM 100 and HIM 330. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 440\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Health Informatics Concepts (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Overview of the information technologies needed to manage patient information in health care facilities and between health-related organizations. Discusses data structures (including clinical classifications, vocabularies, and terminologies), national\/international standards, federal laws\/regulations, legal requirements, clinical decision support, data-mining applications, privacy and security, needs of consumers, public health needs, and emerging technologies. Prerequisites: HIM 305, HIM 306, HIM 330. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 445\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Healthcare Reimbursement (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Overview of payment systems for voluntary healthcare insurance plans, government-sponsored healthcare programs, managed care plans, hospital inpatients, ambulatory care patients, and post-acute care patients. Also includes revenue cycle management, the importance of clinical coding compliance, and value-based purchasing. Prerequisites: CSC 111C, HIM 305, HIM 306, HIM 400 and STA 100. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 450\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Health Information Services Management (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Department management technique for health information management.\u00a0 Applications of systems analysis, computer science, budgeting, personnel management, and plant layout for the health information manager. Prerequisites: HIM 400, MGT 318. This course is taken in the student’s last semester with permission of instructor. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 490\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Selected Topics in Health Information Management (Variable 1-4)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Courses offered as Selected Topics in Health Information Management supplement regularly offered courses.\u00a0 Such courses enhance the student\u2019s general knowledge of Health Information Management topics. Minimum grade of C required for HIM majors.<\/p>\n

HIM 491\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Independent Study (Variable 1\u20114)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Extensive study and research on a particular topic of student interest under the supervision of a faculty member.\u00a0 The student is required to submit a written proposal which includes a description of the project, its duration, education goals, method of evaluation, and number of credits to be earned.\u00a0 Prerequisites:\u00a0 Matriculated students in HIM program only, permission of instructor and dean of subject area. Completion of a three-week experience in health information management services area of a type of health- related organization of the student’s choice. Students will apply management skills learned in the health information management curriculum and they will complete at least one management-level project for the organization. Co-requisites: completion of or concurrent enrollment in HIM 450 and HIM 440. Prerequisite: Matriculated status in the SUNY Polytechnic Institute HIM program.
