legislative and legal requirements; staffing; performance evaluation; employee relations; and compensation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Personal computer projects are included.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>MGT 320 Appraisal, Compensation &amp; Motivation (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The use of compensation as a motivator is a complex issue, but of paramount importance in all organizations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Key topics include motivation theory, performance appraisal, government regulation and internal and external pay equity.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Students design a pay system for a hypothetical company.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Prerequisite:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>MGT 318.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Cross listed with HRM 620.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>MGT 415 Industrial and Labor Relations (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Managerial success in many human resource-oriented work environments demand competency in the labor relations area.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Labor relations extends beyond the traditional boundaries of contracts and grievances.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This course provides the necessary background to enable the student to appreciate how the labor relations environment has developed; to function both formally and informally within that environment; and to understand economic, cultural and legal factors which may affect that environment in the future.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Prerequisite: MGT 318 or permission of instructor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>MGT 425 Human Resource Selection &amp; Staffing (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A systematic framework for understanding the process of recruitment, selection, and retention in organizations.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This framework begins with planning, job analysis, and the analysis of external factors such as the legal environment.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Presents recruitment sources, selection methods (e.g., structured interviews, written testing, work performance samples, validation), and staffing decision making criteria, and concludes with the issue of retention (how to keep the good employees hired).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Topics include job analysis, recruitment, internal selection, external selection, testing, checking references, legal compliance, decision making, final match, and retention of employees.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Prerequisite:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>MGT 318.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>MGT 491 Independent Study (Variable 14)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Extensive study and research on a particular topic of student interest under the supervision of a faculty member.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The student is required to submit a written proposal, its duration, educational goals, method of evaluation, and number of credits to be earned.
