Readings will represent a pan-historical approach to the study of literature and will include non-Western texts. The course will not be arranged by theme or topic; it is designed to cover a broad range of issues, themes, and topics through the study of various literary genres. This course provides a critical and aesthetic introduction to the major genres of literature. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 205 Creative Writing (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Through writing prose fiction or poetry, students develop competency in narration, description, characterization, and other writing skills developing a personal \u201cvoice\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As students write, critique, and rewrite, they learn the skill of self criticism which is a necessary part of all writing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Meets new General Education Arts requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 211 The Arts and Cultural Revolution (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A study of one non-Western culture with emphasis on how its beliefs and customs are represented in the arts, including literature and visual arts, during periods of rapid technological and cultural change.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Comparisons to parallel Western works will be made to clarify cultural difference.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The culture studied will vary; current subjects are modern Japan, revolutionary Mexico, Russia since the Bolshevik Revolution, and modern Israel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 310 Topics in American Literature (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">A study of a major period, genre, figure, or theme in American literature. Typical topics include science fiction, twentieth century poetry, slavery and the Civil War, and the image of women in American literature.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>May be taken more than once as topics change. Meets new General Education Humanities requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 311 Topics in World Literature (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">A study of a major period, genre, figure, or theme in world literature. Typical topics include the modern European novel, technology in literature, Shakespeare, modernism, and women and power.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>May be taken more than once as topics change. Meets new General Education Humanities requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 312 Studies in the Short Story (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Examines the short story as a literary genre.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The emphasis is on interpretation, though selections may vary each semester.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Literary questions provide the occasion for students to develop reading and writing skills and to explore how literature and composition interact. Meets new General Education Humanities requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 320 Recent American Poetry (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Begins with several major poets of the 1920&#8217;s: W.C. Williams, T.S. Eliot, and Wallace Stevens.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These poets serve as background for the study of poetry since World War II.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some of the poets studied will be chosen by the class.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Meets new General Education Humanities requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 331 Black Voices (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Students will become acquainted with several major figures of AfricanAmerican Literature and will examine their works in light of some of the political, cultural, and sociological influences evident within these works. Meets new General Education Humanities requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 350 Dramatic Literature (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">The playwright is a shaper of events as well as a wordsmith.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Plays from several cultural eras will be studied to clarify the dramatist&#8217;s careful balance of plot, character, idea, language, and spectacle. Film and video versions of plays will supplement text study. Meets new General Education Humanities requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 360 Reading the Film (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">By accepting film as a legitimate form of literary expression, we utilize the tools of literary analysis which allow us to &#8220;read&#8221; the images of the cinema.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This course will review some of the components of the language of literature and will introduce the basic elements of film technique.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Students will be asked to &#8220;read,&#8221; understand, and critically evaluate the translation of literary elements into the language of film.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Meets new General Education Humanities requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 361 Film Direction:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Alfred Hitchcock (Variable 2-4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Encourages students to critically examine the facets of the film image.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Using Alfred Hitchcock as a model, students will be presented with the range of options available to a film director and shown some of the techniques employed to make a text (story) visual.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our focus will be on the rhetoric and style found in the language of the cinema as represented in the work of Alfred Hitchcock. Meets new General Education Humanities requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 375 The Novel (4)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">A study of the nature and evolution of the novel, including the social conditions that stimulated its growth and the special characteristics and possibilities of the genre.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Emphasis will fall on British and American novels from the 18th century to the present, including trends such as the novel of manners, realism, symbolic and impressionistic realism, and recent experiments (&#8220;fabulation,&#8221; the nonfiction novel). Meets new General Education Humanities requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>ENG 491 Independent Study (Variable 14)<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\">Extensive study and research on a particular topic of student interest under the supervision of a faculty member.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The student is required to submit a written proposal which includes a description of the project, its duration, educational goals, method of evaluation, and number of credits to be earned.
