{"id":430,"date":"2013-03-01T10:35:56","date_gmt":"2013-03-01T15:35:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sunyit.edu\/apps\/catalog\/undergrad\/student-services\/services-for-students-with-disabilities\/"},"modified":"2019-06-26T17:18:52","modified_gmt":"2019-06-26T17:18:52","slug":"disability-services","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/webapp.sunypoly.edu\/undergrad-catalog-2019-2020\/student-services\/disability-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Services for Students with Disabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Vision and Operations<br \/>\n<\/strong>SUNY Polytechnic Institute welcomes individuals with diverse abilities.\u00a0 The University values diversity and provides an inclusive learning community through the Office of Disability Services. \u00a0The Office of Disability Services ensures students with disabling conditions have equal access to the complete college experience (i.e., equal access to all programs, services, and activities offered by the University).\u00a0 Students with a permanent or temporary disability are encouraged to contact the Office of Disability Services to discuss the resources and services available to accommodate their individual needs.<\/p>\n<p>Disclosure of a disability and providing documentation supportive of the disabling condition is the student\u2019s sole responsibility.\u00a0 The exact nature of one\u2019s disability is kept confidential and, although the necessary paperwork is processed by the Office of Disability Services, the student must disseminate his or her own accommodation plan to instructors and other necessary personnel.\u00a0 Many students find disclosure useful in pursuit of their academic, social and\/or personal goals at SUNY Polytechnic Institute.\u00a0 Individuals may also grant permission to the Office of Disability Services to discuss the nature of their disability with others in pursuit of these goals.<\/p>\n<p>Students seeking accommodations and services must register through the Office of Disability Services.\u00a0 Depending on the nature of their condition, students are asked to provide sufficient and complete documentation from their medical provider, psychologist, former academic institution, and\/or other appropriate professionals.\u00a0 Documentation must clearly identify the individual\u2019s disability, how said disability impacts the academic environment provided by SUNY Polytechnic Institute, and recommendations for appropriate and reasonable accommodations.\u00a0 Once the documentation has been reviewed by the Office of Disability Services, an appointment will be scheduled to discuss the request for accommodations.\u00a0 Determination of appropriate and reasonable accommodations will be made using input from the student, documentation provided by the student, and with consideration of the courses in which the student is enrolled.\u00a0 Accommodation plans are active for one semester only; each semester the student\u2019s plan is reviewed and reissued if appropriate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Services<br \/>\n<\/strong>The Office of Disability Services offers disability-specific accommodations, academic counseling, and advocacy services relevant to the needs of individuals with disabilities.\u00a0 The Office of Disability Services also serves as a National Voter Registration site.<\/p>\n<p>Services include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic accommodations and modifications<\/li>\n<li>Study hall periods providing assistance individualized to the student\u2019s disabling condition<\/li>\n<li>Supportive counseling related to an individual\u2019s academic needs and goals<\/li>\n<li>Weekly academic-related peer support group meetings<\/li>\n<li>Access to and training for relevant assistive technology and software<\/li>\n<li>Referrals to additional resources both on-campus and off-campus<\/li>\n<li>Accessible housing with relevant room features<\/li>\n<li>Service animal and Emotional Support Animal (ESA) requests and processing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Rights and Responsibilities<br \/>\n<\/strong>Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (ADAAA) prohibits discrimination against students with disabling conditions. \u00a0Postsecondary institutions must comply with these nondiscrimination laws, and it is essential that students understand their rights as protected by this legislation.\u00a0 An excellent resource for students with diverse abilities entitled, <em>Students with<\/em> <em>Disabilities Preparing for Postsecondary Education: Know Your Rights and Responsibilities<\/em> can be found online via the U.S. Department of Education (http:\/\/www.ed.gov\/ocr\/transition.html).<\/p>\n<p>To request copies of this publication, please utilize the student\u2019s preferred format listed below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Standard Mail:<br \/>\n<\/strong>ED Pubs Education Publications Center<br \/>\nU.S. Department of Education<br \/>\nP.O.
