{"id":2384,"date":"2013-05-20T12:36:05","date_gmt":"2013-05-20T17:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sunyit.edu\/apps\/catalog\/undergrad\/?page_id=2384"},"modified":"2013-05-20T12:36:05","modified_gmt":"2013-05-20T17:36:05","slug":"121-secon","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/webapp.sunypoly.edu\/undergrad-catalog-2016-2017\/programs\/nursing\/121-secon\/","title":{"rendered":"Joint Articulation Partnership 1+2+1 Program of Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><em>Earn two nursing degrees in four years!<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>SUNY Poly has a unique Joint Articulation Partnership with St. Elizabeth College of Nursing (SECON) for students who want to earn an A.A.S. degree and a B.S. degree with a major in Nursing. The goal of this partnership is to deliver a strong educational foundation developed during your first (freshman) year at SUNY Poly. Your educational foundation will be coupled with a hands-on learning approach by enrolling in your second and third year at St. Elizabeth College of Nursing (SECON) where you will complete over 590 hours of clinical time and complete your AAS degree in Nursing. You will return to SUNY Poly for year 4 and complete your Baccalaureate degree (BS) in Nursing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grading<br \/>\n<\/strong>The student must maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) to remain in good standing at SUNY Poly and a GPA of 2.75 to continue onto year 2 at St. Elizabeth College of Nursing.<\/p>\n<p>While at SUNY Poly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The student must obtain a minimum grade of \u201cC\u201d in each nursing course.<\/li>\n<li>The student must pass both the theoretical and clinical components of a nursing course, or the course must be repeated in its entirety. A student may repeat a nursing course only once.<\/li>\n<li>If a minimum grade of \u201cC\u201d is not obtained a second time, the student will be required to withdraw from the nursing program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For information about the grading policy at SECON please refer to their website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.secon.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.secon.edu\/<\/a> and 2015\/2016 student Handbook <a href=\"http:\/\/www.secon.edu\/student\/current\/handbook\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.secon.edu\/student\/current\/handbook\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>R.N. Licensure<br \/>\n<\/strong>A current New York (NY) Registered Nursing (RN) License is required for year 4 coursework. Students who have not successfully obtained\u00a0 current NY State RN License may continue with arts and science courses only until registration and licensure is obtained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clinical Experiences<br \/>\n<\/strong>Principles of nursing are explored and examined more fully within a wide variety of diverse patient settings while at SUNY Poly and\u00a0 SECON. Students must meet licensure, CPR and health clearance requirements upon admission and these must be maintained\u00a0 while enrolled at SECON or SUNY Poly.<\/p>\n<p>Students must have a clear and unencumbered Nursing license in order to participate in clinical experiences in their final year at SUNY Poly. <strong>Failure to report any license sanction or condition will result in automatic failure of the course and removal from the nursing program.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unsafe clinical performance is care that seriously jeopardizes the patient\u2019s well-being and\/or causes potential or actual harm to self or others. A student demonstrating a pattern of unsafe performance will not be allowed to continue in the clinical nursing course. In addition, students are required to adhere to legal and ethical standards as established by regulatory agencies and nursing professional standards. Failure to comply with the above is cause for immediate dismissal from the program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health Requirements<br \/>\n<\/strong>All students must meet the health requirements of the nursing program and health agencies. Each student must be able to perform a full range of clinical activities. Satisfactory health clearance must be complete and on file in the Health and Wellness Center upon admission, and must be maintained while matriculated at SECON or SUNY Poly.\u00a0 Health forms will require students to be free from physical or mental impairments, including habituation or addiction to depressants, stimulants, narcotics, alcohol, or other behavior-altering substances that might interfere with the performance of their duties or would impose a potential risk to patients or personnel.\u00a0<strong>Attendance at clinical activity without prior clinical clearance or while exhibiting unsafe or inappropriate behavior will result in clinical failure.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Computer Requirements<br \/>\n<\/strong>Computer compatible with the current ANGEL platform( Blackboard ). Students may go to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sunyit.sln.suny.edu\/default.asp\">https:\/\/sunyit.sln.suny.edu\/default.asp<\/a>\u00a0 to check computer capabilities. Students must have a USB headset with microphone.\u00a0 A wired internet connection is preferred.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transportation and Professional Attire<br \/>\n<\/strong>All students must provide their own transportation for field trips, laboratory, and clinical assignments associated with their nursing courses. Professional attire and roles will be specified for each course by the clinical professor in collaboration with agency supervisors.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>I. SUNY General Education Requirement<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u2013 (30 credits)<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>All SUNY students must satisfy the following requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No fewer than 30 credits must be attained from the SUNY approved General Education Course List with the following provisions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mathematics (STA 100 required by program)<\/li>\n<li>Basic Communication\u00a0 (ENG 101 or equivalent)<\/li>\n<li>At least\u00a0<strong>five (5)\u00a0<\/strong>out of the following\u00a0<strong>eight<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>(8)<\/strong>\u00a0SUNY General Education categories:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Natural Science (BIO 215T &amp; BIO 215L w\/lab required by program)<\/li>\n<li>Social Science (PSY 100)<\/li>\n<li>American History<\/li>\n<li>Western Civilization<\/li>\n<li>Other World Civilization<\/li>\n<li>Humanities<\/li>\n<li>The Arts<\/li>\n<li>Foreign Language<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NOTE: You may take more than one course in a given category to complete this 30 credit hour requirement, but you must also satisfy the appropriate number of categories.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>II.\u00a0 Liberal Arts\/Science Requirements<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u2013 (30 credits)<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The New York State Education Department (SED) requires a student earning a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree to attain no fewer than 60 credits of combined SUNY General Education and Liberal Arts\/Sciences courses. There may be overlap between courses meeting the SUNY General Education Requirements, Liberal Arts\/Sciences Requirements, and Program Core requirements but a student may receive course credits only once even if multiple requirements are satisfied by a single course.\u00a0 The total number of combined credit hours must be no fewer than 60 credits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUNYIT degree requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Natural Sciences\u00a0<\/strong>One course which shall be a General Education Natural Science course. For Nursing students, the requirement is satisfied by BIO 215T, BIO 215L, BIO 216T &amp; BIO 216L. Both courses are with a lab.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Upper-Division Writing Course\u00a0<\/strong>See the Catalog descriptions of COM courses to find specific courses that satisfy\u00a0 this requirement.
