Laboratory and lecture.\u00a0\u00a0 Two hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory per week.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 111\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Medical Terminology (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The language of medicine including Latin\/Greek prefixes, suffixes and root words.\u00a0 Diagnostic and procedural terms will be included.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 212\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pathophysiology for Health Information Management (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A study of major disease processes including their symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.\u00a0 Students will learn which diagnostic tests are used as well as the appropriate surgical techniques.\u00a0 Basic pharmacology and the most commonly used drugs will be discussed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 220\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Data Management and Analysis for Health Information (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Use of database management software to manage and query health care data. Use of spreadsheet software to import data form health care databases. Data presentation principles. Calculation and use of special statistics related to the health care setting. These statistics are used for health facility planning and administration and for epidemiology. Pre\/corequisite: CSC 311C.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 305\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Inpatient Coding and Classification (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Coding and classification schemes used for hospital inpatients will be discussed.\u00a0 Special emphasis will be placed on the International Classification of Disease-10th-Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and International Classification of Disease-10<sup>th<\/sup>-Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-PCS).\u00a0 ICD-9CM will be discussed as legacy. Two hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory per week.\u00a0 Prerequisites: HIM 100\/111\/212 and BIO 215.\u00a0 Corequisite:\u00a0 Completion of or concurrent enrollment in BIO 216.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 306\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Outpatient Coding and Classification (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Coding and classification schemes used for outpatients in hospitals, ambulatory care centers and physician offices will be discussed.\u00a0 Special emphasis will be placed on Current Procedural Terminology, 4th edition (CPT-4), and reimbursement classifications.\u00a0 Two hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week.\u00a0 Prerequisites: BIO 215.\u00a0 Corequisite:\u00a0 Completion of or concurrent enrollment in HIM 305 and BIO 216.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 309\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Legal Aspects of Health Information (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Overview of the legal system, civil procedure, rules of evidence, tort law, corporation law, contracts, and antitrust laws. Discussion of specific laws related to health information such as patient consent, the legal health record, privacy, security, access, disclosure, release of information, required reporting, risk management, quality improvement, corporate compliance, medical staff, and worker-related issues.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 313\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Management for the Health Professions (3) <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Introduces students to six basic management functions (planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling and decision making) in the context of health care such as hospitals, long term care facilities and other health related organizations.\u00a0 Concepts of management and management responsibilities (such as ethics, leadership and motivation) are related to selected functions.\u00a0 Students lead case discussion groups or critique journal articles on each management function.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 350\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Introduction to ICD-10-CM\/PCS<\/b><\/p>\n<p>International Classification of Disease, 10<sup>th<\/sup> Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) and International Classification of Disease, 10<sup>th<\/sup> Revision, Procedure Classification System (ICD-10-PCS) and scheduled for implementation in 2013. Students will build their coding skills in these classifications, learn the similarities and differences between ICD-10-CM\/PCS and prior versions, use\/interpret mapping between ICD-10-CM\/PCS and prior versions, and design a transition plan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 392\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Professional Practice Experience I &#8211; Technical (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The student will complete a three-week practicum in a hospital health information management services area.\u00a0 Students will practice technical skills learned during the first year of the health information management curriculum.\u00a0 (Note: Students who transfer from a health information technology program will transfer the equivalent of this course.)\u00a0 Prerequisites:\u00a0 HIM 305, HIM 306, and HIM 309. Matriculated status in the SUNYIT HIM program. Permission of the instructor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 400\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Non-Hospital Health Information Management Systems (2)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Non-hospital health care settings offer exciting employment alternatives for health information managers.\u00a0 Included in this course will be a study of health information systems for psychiatric, developmental, occupational, long term, home health, correctional, emergency medical services, and veterinary care.\u00a0 In addition, disease registries will be covered.\u00a0 Prerequisites: HIM 392. Corequisite: HIM 494.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 401\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Systems for the Evaluation and Improvement of Health Care Systems (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A study of the historical basis for current trends in the evaluation of health care, and an explanation of the role of the health care manager in this process.\u00a0 Methods for assessing quality and appropriateness.\u00a0 Use of the system as a risk management tool.\u00a0 Two hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory per week. Prerequisites: HIM 100, STA 100<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 403\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Introduction to Epidemiology (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Preventing the incidence of disease requires an understanding of the risk factors associated with its cause.\u00a0 This course will provide a foundation for understanding the dynamics of health and disease in society, and impart a grasp of the fundamentals of epidemiology.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 405\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Healthcare Reimbursement (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Overview of payment systems for voluntary healthcare insurance plans, government-sponsored healthcare programs, managed care plans, hospital inpatients, ambulatory care patients, and post-acute care patients. Also includes revenue cycle management, the importance of clinical coding compliance, and value-based purchasing. Prerequisites: CSC 311C, HIM 305, HIM 306, and STA 100.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 410\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Health Information Services Management (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Department management technique for health information management.\u00a0 Applications of systems analysis, computer science, budgeting, personnel management, and plant layout for the health information manager.\u00a0 Two hours lecture and two hours laboratory per week.\u00a0 Prerequisites: HIM 400, and MGT 318.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 425\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Research in Health Information Management (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>A study of the application of research techniques to the health information management field.\u00a0 Students will perform small research studies and will review published research in the field. Prerequisite: STA 100.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><b>HIM 435\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Health Care Management\/Medical Information Systems (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This course is intended to expose hospital managers to the areas where computers can assist in the direct care of the patient and the management of hospitals.\u00a0 Emphasis will be placed on how to evaluate computers and information systems for hospitals, the unique problems involved in implementing computerized systems in the health care environment, and strategies for minimizing problems.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 440\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Electronic Health Records (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Addresses the definition, benefits, standards, functionality and confidentiality\/security measures for the electronic health record.\u00a0 Case studies will be used to show how two health care organizations have developed their systems.\u00a0 Prerequisite:\u00a0 HIM 100, HIM 220<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 490\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Selected Topics in Health Information Management (Variable 1-4)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Courses offered as Selected Topics in Health Information Management supplement regularly offered courses.\u00a0 Such courses enhance the student\u2019s general knowledge of Health Information Management topics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 491\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Independent Study (Variable 1\u20114)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Extensive study and research on a particular topic of student interest under the supervision of a faculty member.\u00a0 The student is required to submit a written proposal which includes a description of the project, its duration, education goals, method of evaluation, and number of credits to be earned.\u00a0 Prerequisites:\u00a0 Matriculated students only, permission of instructor and dean of subject area.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 493\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Senior Seminar (2)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Final summary course with discussion of current events in the health information management field and preparation to enter the job market.\u00a0 Includes a final comprehensive examination on the curriculum (a mock certification examination for the registered health information administrator).\u00a0 Pre\/Corequisite: HIM 410.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 494\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Professional Practice Experience II &#8211; Specialty (1)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Rotations through various non-hospital health information management service areas in facilities, such as those dealing with mental health, developmental disabilities, long\u2011term care, hospice, home care, ambulatory care, disease registries, correctional health and occupational health.\u00a0 Co-requisite:\u00a0 HIM 400.\u00a0 Prerequisite: Matriculated status in the SUNYIT HIM program.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>HIM 495\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Professional Practice Experience III \u2013 Management (3)<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Completion of a three-week experience in the health information management services area of a type of health\u2013related organization of the student&#8217;s choice.\u00a0 Students will apply management skills learned in the health information management curriculum and they will complete at least one management-level project for the organization.
