{"id":59,"date":"2013-02-26T14:50:32","date_gmt":"2013-02-26T19:50:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sunyit.edu\/apps\/catalog\/undergrad\/financial-aid\/applying-for-financial-aid\/"},"modified":"2013-02-26T14:50:32","modified_gmt":"2013-02-26T19:50:32","slug":"applyingfor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/webapp.sunypoly.edu\/undergrad-catalog-2014-2015\/financial-aid\/applyingfor\/","title":{"rendered":"Applying for Financial Aid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To be eligible for financial aid, undergraduate students must meet those criteria as outlined on the \u201cEligibility\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunyit.edu\/financial-aid\/eligibility\">www.sunyit.edu\/financial-aid\/eligibility<\/a> page of the Financial Aid Office website.<\/p>\n<p>To apply for financial aid, students must complete the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) from the U.S. Department of Education at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pin.ed.gov\">www.pin.ed.gov<\/a>.\u00a0 Parents of dependent students will also be required to apply for a PIN. If you or your parent(s) have misplaced your original PIN, you can visit the PIN website to request a duplicate PIN.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\">Complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fafsa.gov\">www.fafsa.gov<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\">.\u00a0 SUNYIT\u2019s Federal School Code is 011678.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\nStudents are encouraged to complete the FAFSA after January 1<sup>st<\/sup> as soon as possible.\u00a0 To ensure timely financial aid process, students can submit the FAFSA using estimated adjusted gross income and income tax paid values.\u00a0 Upon submission of your official, completed federal tax return to the IRS, please update the FAFSA to show the actual amounts reported to the IRS.<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\">If your federal taxes have already been completed and filed with the IRS, please use the \u201cIRS Data Retrieval Tool\u201d when completing the FAFSA.\u00a0 This will allow you to bring certain income\/tax information from the IRS website into your FAFSA. Note that your taxes must have been submitted\/processed by the IRS at least 3 weeks previously if filed electronically and 8 weeks if sent to the IRS by mail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\">New York State Residents ONLY can apply for the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hesc.ny.gov\/content.nsf\/SFC\/Applying_for_TAP\">www.hesc.ny.gov\/content.nsf\/SFC\/Applying_for_TAP<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\">\u00a0as part of their online FAFSA application process.\u00a0 SUNYIT\u2019s NYS TAP Code is 4975.<\/span><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\"><br \/>\nFrom the FAFSA submission confirmation page, select the link that says \u201cFile Your TAP Application Now\u201d.\u00a0 If you exited the FAFSA before selecting this option, you can complete the online TAP application after HESC (NYS Higher Education Services Corporation) receives your FAFSA data (after three business days).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Additional information about the financial aid application process is available on the Financial Aid Office website under the \u201cApply for Financial Aid\u201d area <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunyit.edu\/financial_aid\/apply\">www.sunyit.edu\/financial_aid\/apply<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The primary responsibility for meeting educational costs rests with the student and his\/her family. The SUNYIT Financial Aid Office uses the expected family contribution (EFC) generated from the FAFSA as the basis for the student\/family contribution.<\/p>\n<p>SUNYIT gives priority in the awarding of financial aid to those students with the greatest financial need.\u00a0 Financial need is determined by subtracting the expected family contribution from the student\u2019s estimated cost of attendance.<\/p>\n<p>While SUNYIT does not have a deadline for applying for financial aid, we encourage our students to apply by March 1<sup>st<\/sup> each year. Applications are processed on a rolling basis starting in late February.<\/p>\n<p>A financial aid award letter will be sent to each student who has been accepted and whose financial aid application is complete.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Education randomly selects some financial aid applicants to be verified.\u00a0 In those cases, the Financial Aid Office will request additional documents including an institutional verification worksheet, signed copies of your federal income tax return, and W2 forms. If you were unable to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing the FAFSA, an IRS Tax Transcript will also be required. These documents must be reviewed and necessary corrections made before financial aid is awarded.<\/p>\n<p>If there has been a significant decrease in the student\u2019s (if independent) or parent\u2019s (if dependent) income from the prior year, a Special Condition form may be submitted to the Financial Aid Office along with supporting documentation.
