The various individuals honored by the Genesis Group in the organization’s Class of 2017 Outstanding Young Professionals come from a variety of industries – banking, sanitation, financing, public safety, and more. But only one of those being honored is not only a business person, but currently a student – and a SUNY Poly student at that.

Scott Murray, a Business Administration major at SUNY Poly was honored to find out that he was among the 2017 Genesis Group Outstanding Young Professionals, feeling a sense of recognition and vindication for his hard work, juggling college classwork at the same time as several successful business ventures.

His company Cognitive Systems won $25,000 at the 2014 Commercialization Academy at SUNY Poly, allowing him to commercialize an intellectual property from the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome. Murray’s company took an algorithm used by the Department of Defense and licensed the technology, applying it to manufacturing.

“We were able to go into a manufacturing environment and use data points to predict when the manufacturing line would go down, saving [the manufacturer] millions year,” Murray explained.

His entrepreneurial spirit continued with a food delivery service called “Munchie Men,” contracting with 35 local restaurants in the Utica area, allowing customers to order food and have it delivered through a network of 25 independent contractors (similar to the setup of Uber) that would go pick up the food and deliver it to the final destination.

Currently, his talents are being put to use by Assured Information Security where he continues to help commercialize intellectual properties.

Murray, and his fellow Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs, were honored at the Genesis Group’s annual Striving for Success Dinner and Award ceremony on April 6 at Hotel Utica.
