March 2017

Veronica TichenorWhen the Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS) held their winter meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico early February, a myriad of topics were discussed, including immigration and citizenship, intersectionality and privilege, and gender and society. The meeting also marked the installation of SUNY Poly’s own Dr. Veronica Tichenor as the Society’s Treasurer.

Sociologists for Women in Society is an international organization of social scientists–students, faculty, practitioners, and researchers–working together to improve the position of women within sociology and society in general.

“The group is focused on promoting sociological feminist scholarship and leadership, as well as social action on a full range of human rights issues, both nationally and internationally,” Dr. Tichenor says. “The group also does a great deal to help women facing discrimination in academia.”

An Associate Professor of Sociology as well as Program Coordinator for Community and Behavioral Health in the SUNY Poly College of Health Sciences & Management, Dr. Tichenor has been part of the SWS organization for 20 years, serving in the past as Chair of the Sister-to-Sister Committee, which works on issues of diversity and inclusion in the organization.

Sociologists for Women in SocietyThe Sociologists for Women in Society also publishes (in partnership with Sage publications) the academic journal Gender and Society.

“It’s one of the most influential journals in gender scholarship/studies, and represents the main funding stream for SWS.”

Dr. Tichenor will serve a three-year term as the organization’s treasurer.

“I’m pleased to take on the Treasurer’s position,” she says. “I see my main job as working to safeguard the financial position of the organization so that it can continue to promote social justice around the globe.”
