The SUNY Poly Society of Women Engineers (SWE) hosted 120 eighth graders from Holland Patent School District to encourage young, talented minds to the join the technical fields

More than a hundred middle schoolers were on campus at SUNY Poly in Utica Friday, November 18, as the SUNY Poly SWE Club (Society of Women Engineers) graciously hosted a Nano / STEM Day, encouraging young, talented minds to become interested in technical careers.

Nano / STEM Day is designed to get students interested in science, technology, engineering and math fields by showing them a wide variety of engaging and practical technologies.

The SUNY Poly Society of Women Engineers Club organized the event, creating different stations for the 120 eighth graders from the Holland Patent School District in attendance to interact with. Each station was composed of basic technology, multiple Engineering disciplines (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical), Mathematics, and Computer Science.

The numerous activities showed students the many different skills and technologies that are used in the real world. Additionally, the experiences and interact helped teach them communication and leadership skills, an essential component for any any career path.

Many students said they left the event inspired, telling their teachers and counselors they intend to work harder in school to make sure they have the opportunity to attend a college like SUNY Poly.

All the presenters and volunteers were from other student clubs:

  • American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
  • BAJA Car Club
  • DOEF Fraternity
  • FIRST Robotics Challenge Team (FRC)
  • Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE)
  • Network and Computer Security (NCS)
  • Remote Controlled (RC) Hobby Club
