Students take canoe journey in Adirondacks

November 2016

2016-canoe-trip-01Over the weekend of October 14-16, eight students from the Outdoor Education Program Suite of Oriskany Hall took a 12-mile round-trip canoe journey up the Raquette River, east of Tupper Lake in the Adirondacks.

Led by their R.A. (and Eagle Scout) Luke Winters and Faculty Advisor, Assistant Professor of Biology Adam T. McLain, the students learned about camping, including dutch oven cooking, setting up tents, building a campfire, hanging a bear bag, and canoeing technique.

“We saw Raquette Falls, the nearby ranger station, and plenty of great river views,” said McLain. “Luke is quite the back-country chef, and he prepared chicken and biscuits, jambalaya, hummus wraps, hot coffee, and even an omelette for breakfast one morning. Everyone had a terrific time, and we are planning on doing more trips in the future.”

The group camped for two nights with the hopes to make such an excursion an annual occurrence each Fall.
