February 2016

Kathryn StamKathryn Stam attended the National Immigration Integration Conference in Brooklyn, NY on Dec. 13-15, 2015.

Notable speaker at the conference included Mayor Bill de Blasio, Senator Chuck Schumer, Congressman Luis Gutierrez, Governor Martin O’Malley, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Senator Bernie Sanders.  Dr. Stam was invited to the conference as part of the Grand Prize she received from a communications contest through Welcoming America that celebrated this website (https://resettlementsnapshots.wordpress.com/) that was created with Doug Cohen, a former student from SUNY Poly’s Information Design and Technology online graduate program.

An article that she co-wrote with Lindsey Kingston from Webster University called, “Recovering from Statelessness: Resettled Bhutanese-Nepali and Karen Refugees Reflect on Lack of Legal Nationality,” was accepted for publication by The Journal of Human Rights (expected in print, 2017).

In October, she presented papers about refugee issues at the New York Conference on Asian Studies at Vassar College and the Conference on South Asia in Madison, Wisconsin. At Vassar, Kathryn also displayed the “Refugees Starting Over,” traveling exhibit that was designed by staff member Lynne Browne, with support from a UUP-IDA grant.
