Utica campus observes Pi Day

April 2015

SUNY Poly became “SUNY Pi” for a day, as part of the global observance of “Pi Day” last month. The Utica campus celebration came one day in advance of the actual “holiday,” with faculty, staff and students enjoying Pi-themed pizza pie bearing a pi symbol (π) constructed of pepperoni.

PiDayPizzaMakingEach year, scientists, mathematicians and students around the world mark “Pi Day” on March 14 because the date (3.14) is roughly the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, represented by the Greek letter, “π,” which is approximately 3.14159. This year, for the first time in a century, “Pi Day” on 3/14/15 included the first five digits of Pi: 3.1415. SUNY Pi annually joins in the celebration, which promotes the kind of exciting science and math concepts that underpin New York State’s rapidly growing high-tech economy.
