Accepted Student Day draws hundreds to campus

March 2014

The SUNYIT campus welcomed hundreds of high school students in March who have applied to and officially been accepted to enroll this fall. Each spring, Accepted Student Day allows prospective students and their families to speak one-on-one with faculty members, take part in mock classes, tour the campus, and ask questions to panels of faculty members, ranging from what type of computer to buy, to what minors are offered.

Anna Huhko of Herkimer intends on studying nursing at SUNYIT and was very glad that she gets to do so while also being close to home.

“It’s affordable and not too far away. I could commute,” she said, adding that by Accepted Student Day she had already made up her mind that SUNYIT was the place for her. “I’m pretty much all set for coming here. I’m really excited.”

Andrew Delia, of Springfield, N.J., plans on attending SUNYIT in the fall of 2014 and studying cybersecurity, according to his father, Tony.

“I think it’s a definite,” Tony Delia said. “I think it’s the smallness of the school and the class sizes that really helped. When the financials came through, that just added to it.”

Delia said his wife and son had been to the campus previously, but the entire family made the trip from New Jersey for Accepted Student Day to interact with other students and the faculty, helping to clinch their decision.

“I think today’s gone really well,” Tony Delia said. “When we were listening to the faculty panels, they were very knowledgeable and student-based. A lot of the answers were more student-centric instead of school-centric.”
