SUNYIT community witnesses ‘Nano Utica’ announcement

October 2013

SUNYIT faculty, staff and students were among the hundreds of attendees who filled the Student Center multipurpose room to capacity for Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s October 10 announcement of ‘Nano Utica,’ a $1.5 billion public-private investment that will make the Mohawk Valley New York’s next major hub of nanotech research. Those in attendance said the announcement bodes well for SUNYIT and the entire region.

“The spin-off impact of Nano Utica, on both [SUNYIT] and the greater community, will be enormous,” said Steve Schneider, professor of political science. “Building on the work of the Governor’s Regional Economic Development Councils, SUNYIT is poised to play a central role in the economic development of Mohawk Valley.”

Andrew Bellinger, interim assistant vice president for information technology services, agreed.

“To know that our students will have these semiconductor super powers in their backyard is very exciting for SUNYIT,” Bellinger said. “The jobs, internships and publicity that Nano Utica will bring to the SUNYIT campus will help build on the excitement and recruiting potential that was already in place.”
