Celebrating United Nations Day

SUNYIT and the Upper Mohawk Valley Chapter of the United Nations Association observed United Nations Day October 26, as more than a hundred high school students visited campus.

United Nations Day was established by Presidential Proclamation to commemorate the establishment of the United Nations on October 24, 1945. It is celebrated by all 81 U.N.-member countries during United Nations Week.

William W. Durgin, provost (in photo at right), and David Garrett, director of international student services, welcomed event attendees from several area school districts, including New Hartford, New York Mills, Waterville and Whitesboro. SUNYIT has students and faculty from more than a dozen nations, and enjoys academic partnerships with institutions in several nations.

The United Nations Association of the United States is a national organization dedicated to strengthening the UN system and to enhancing U.S. participation in international institutions. Through a nationwide network of chapters, divisions, and affiliated organizations, UNA-USA provides information and educational services on the work of the United Nations and on other global issues for students, scholars, Congress and the media. Each year it coordinates the observance of UN Day in hundreds of communities across the nation.
