Study of the impact of informatics on the socio-cultural environment of health care and the infrastructure to support health care informatics is a primary focus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 509 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Legal Issues in Health Informatics (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A study of the overall legal aspects of the various dimensions of health informatics and information management. Specific applications and study will include areas of health informatics and information management, the medical staff, facility liability, consent for treatment, confidentiality of health information, computerization of health information, professional negligence\/medical malpractice and other related topics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 510 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Public Health Systems (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course examines the fundamental principles of public and population health. It covers the determinants of health, health disparities, health promotion, epidemiological methods, and the organization and financing of public health systems. Students will explore global health trends, policy frameworks, and innovative public health interventions to gain a systems-level understanding of population-level health outcomes. By integrating theory with real-world case studies and hands-on projects, learners will develop the skills to analyze data, evaluate policies, and design evidence-based initiative that promote health equity and improve community well-being.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>HI 520 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Standardized Code Sets and Medical Terminologies (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Practical overview of methods and tools for creating, acquiring, representing, and classifying health information. Overview of health care delivery, human factors, and socio-technical systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>HI 530 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Computational Informatics (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Methods of extracting, merging, organizing, processing, analyzing, and visualizing health data, information, and knowledge. A practical overview of biostatistics in health informatics to support medical decision making. Introduction to network analysis, including topics in sampling strategies, community detection, and centrality measures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 540 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Human-Technology Interaction in Health Care (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Practical Overview of techniques in integrating technology into patient care. Exploration of current trends and historical perspectives of human-technology interaction in healthcare. Application of principles of user interface designs and evaluation techniques in healthcare. Examination of methods for assessing usability of technology in healthcare. Review of hardware, software, and peripherals in clinical care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 550 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Information Security in Health Informatics (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In-depth review of standards for health information exchange (HIE) and security in clinical information systems. Main topics include authentication, authorization, encryption, access control, and integrity. Other topics relate to computer networks, communications protocols, client-servers architecture, and cybersecurity policies and procedures as they pertain to health information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 560 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Applied AI in Health Informatics (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course introduces the core concepts and applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Health Informatics, emphasizing the practical implementation of AI methods using Python. Students will explore large language models (LLMs), prompt engineering, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), fine-tuning strategies, and AI agent architectures for clinical information. Through hands-on assignments and projects, students will learn how to apply these techniques to improve clinical decision support, patient engagement, and healthcare outcomes while considering ethical, legal, and regulatory constraints. Prerequisites: DSA 504 and HI 530 or Permission of Instructor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 570 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Data Fusion in Health Informatics (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course explores the foundational methods and technologies for aggregating heterogeneous patient data- from clinical records and genomic information to social determinants of health and environmental factors. Students will study data fusion techniques, including entity resolution, record linkage, and multi-source integration while gaining hands-on experience with data modeling, graph databases, and Python-based analysis. By integrating theoretical frameworks of data fusion with practical case studies and current research, the course prepares students to build comprehensive patient profiles that support precision medicine and personalized healthcare decision-making. Prerequisites: HI 530 and HI 610 or Permission of Instructor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 580 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Geospatial &amp; Digital Health Analytics (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course examines how digital technologies, big data analytics, and geospatial information systems transform public health practice and research. Students will engage with both traditional mapping techniques and emerging digital data sources- including social media, mobile, wearable, and loT data- to support real-time surveillance, digital epidemiology, and advanced spatial analysis. Through hands-on exercises, case studies, and collaborative projects, learners will develop practical skills in data integration, machine learning applications, advanced visualization, and ethical considerations in managing and analyzing geospatial and digital data for population health initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 591 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Independent Study (1-3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Extensive study and research on a particular health informatics topic of student interest under the supervision of a faculty member. The student is required to submit a written proposal which includes a description of the project, its duration, educational goals, method of evaluation, and number of credits to be earned. Permission of the instructor required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>HI 600 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Quality Improvement in Health Informatics (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Overview of quality improvement methods. Includes topics about defining, measuring, analyzing, improving, and controlling quality in various areas of healthcare and informatics. Application areas include health information technology and management. The effects of social, psychological, and behavioral factors on quality are considered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>HI 610 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Databases in Health Informatics (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Overview of system development life cycle and prototyping methods. Practical approaches to assessing user needs in health care, data modeling, normalization, structured query language (SQL), data warehousing, and data mining. Review of NoSQL techniques for information storage, retrieval, and presentation practices to support clinical decisions and policy making in health care. Investigation of data transformation, patterns recognition, and knowledge discovery techniques in health care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 620 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Information Governance in Health Care (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Exploration of information governance theories and methods. Survey of policies and procedures for managing the complex infrastructure of electronic health record (EHR) systems and health information exchanges (HIE) networks. Topics include operational and risk management of computerized order entry, results management, documentation, release of information, and decision support systems. Overview of compliance and standards for privacy, confidentiality, security, and interoperability in EHR systems and HIE networks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 630 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Clinical Decision Support Systems (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) have been utilized in many areas of clinical medicine, nursing, pharmacy, healthcare administration and research. This course introduces students to theoretical, statistical, and practical concepts underlying modern medical decision making. It then proceeds to review the multiple methods for knowledge generation for CDSS systems. This course provides &#8220;hands-on&#8221; experience to students in creating their own prototype of a CDSS system. Current implementations of stand-alone and integrated CDSS will be evaluated. Techniques for planning and evaluation of CDSS implementation will be reviewed. Human factors, including work-flow integration, and the ethical, legal and regulatory aspects of CDSS use will be explored.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 640 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Clinical Knowledge Discovery (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course examines how clinical ontologies and knowledge graphs can be utilized to model, integrate, and analyze clinical data for uncovering patterns in clinical practices and patient care. Students will learn to design, implement, and query knowledge graphs, and apply principles of semantic data modeling to clinical settings. Emphasis is placed on hands-on experiences using graph database tools to uncover solutions to real-world clinical care challenges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HI 699 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Health Informatics Practicum\/Project (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Completion of practicum\/project. Seminar lectures and participation in the discussions and potential solutions to current issues in Health Informatics. Real-world cases are reviewed, and collaborative problem-solving techniques are presented.
