Topics include: energy resource evaluation, types of energy, economic and physical demand for energy, resource utilization (land, water, and other fixed assets), technical performance including implications of the second law of thermodynamics, regional and global effects of energy production, role of economic evaluation in energy projects, sustainability metrics, future resources including geothermal, biomass, solar thermal &amp; solar electric, wind and hydropower. The course content includes robot classifications, rigid motions, homogeneous transformations, robot forward kinematics, robot inverse kinematics, differential kinematics and Jacobians, motion planning and trajectory generation, robot dynamics, independent joint control, robot sensors and actuators, and robot programming. These techniques will be applied through the use of MATLAB\/Python tools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MST 651\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Autonomous Robots (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The principles of robotic autonomy will be explored. Students will explore the theoretical, algorithmic, and implementation aspects of autonomous robotic modeling, control, perception, localization, planning, decision making, navigation and SLAM. These techniques will be applied through completion of programming-based ground mobile robot projects using MATLAB\/ Python tools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MST 673\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 System Simulation (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The course addresses the following topics:\u00a0 Overview of computer modeling and simulation, systems and models, queuing theory, simulation of discrete and continuous systems, simulation software packages.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MST 674\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Semiconductor Device and Fabrication (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course provides a concept of advanced semiconductor devices and the fabrication techniques that enable their performance. Topics include the physics and design of modern electronic and optoelectronic devices such as MOSFETs, FinFET&#8217;s, GAA, HEMTs, wide bandgap devices (SiC, GaN, Ga2O3, and emerging nano- and quantum devices. Students will also explore advanced fabrication technologies, including epitaxy, ion implantation, oxidation, diffusion, lithography, etching, thin-film deposition (CVD, ALD, PVD), and process integration for state-of-the-art devices. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to analyze, compare, and evaluate advanced semiconductor devices and understand the manufacturing processes critical to modern electronics and systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MST 675\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Semiconductor Characterization (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course introduces the fundamental principles and practical applications of electrical, chemical, and physical measurement techniques used to characterize semiconductor materials and devices. Students will explore industry-standard methods such as Hall effect, four-point probe, capacitance-voltage profiling, deep-level transient spectroscopy, and current-voltage and capacitance-time analysis for evaluating material and device properties. Additional topics include surface and structural characterization using techniques such as X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, and spectroscopic methods. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with foundational skills for selecting, applying, and critically evaluating characterization tools in both research and industry settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MST 680\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Reliability and Quality Assurance (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course is a study of applications of reliability-maintainability models, reliability testing and analysis, and quality engineering-design, process, control and quality transformation.\u00a0 Prerequisite:\u00a0 Statistics, Statistical Quality Control or equivalent or consent of instructor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>MST 682\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Topics in Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An overview of the components of CIM Enterprise, System Design, Material Handling,\u00a0 Materials Requirement Planning (MRP), Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRPII), Manufacturing Database and Management, Expert Systems for Manufacturing.\u00a0 Two hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory per week.\u00a0 Prerequisites:\u00a0 An undergraduate course in CAD or CAM or CIM, or consent of instructor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MST 690\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thesis I (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MST 690 is the first state of the graduate thesis sequence in the MS in Advanced Technology program. This course emphasizes theoretical analysis, modeling, and literature review as preparation for experimental or applied research. Students define a research problem, conduct a critical review of prior work, and apply theoretical, computational, or analytical methods to establish feasibility. Prerequisites: MST 674 and MST 675 for the Semiconductor Track, MST 692 and MST 693 for the Advanced Manufacturing Track, MST 650 and MST 651 for the Robotics Track, and faculty advisor approval.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MST 691\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Thesis II (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MST 691 is the second stage of the graduate thesis sequence in the MS in Advanced Technology program. This course emphasizes experimental and applied research, building on the theoretical foundation established in MST 690. Students execute their approved research plan, collect and analyze data, and synthesize findings into a completed thesis. The course culminates in a written thesis and oral defense. Prerequisite: MST 690 with a grade of C or better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MST 692\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Materials Selection in Design (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The goal of the course is to introduce engineering students to a rigorous process of selecting materials for engineering designs. The student is exposed to the important properties of materials, the science that governs them and the ability to choose the correct materials, taking into account the limiting design variables in the qualitative and quantitative fashion. The course also seeks to ensure that students have a broad-based knowledge of the science of all types of materials at an introductory level. The influence of costing in materials choice and its incorporation into design considerations, as well as identifying &amp; resolving conflicting priorities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MST 694\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Advanced Manufacturing with Metals: Fundamentals and Applications (3)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This course introduces the fundamentals of metallic advanced manufacturing, tracing its development from rapid prototyping to modern industrial applications. Students will explore the economic and performance drivers of advanced manufacturing, design considerations, and key technologies such as laser- and electron-beam-based processes. Topics include feedstock materials, process modeling, hybrid advanced manufacturing, post-processing, and evaluation of part quality and reliability.
